Joel Howard was just another brush-popper working south of the Rio Grande when he first set eyes on Consuela O'Rourke. It was in the year 1842, six years after the battle of Alamo. For the past two years Joel had been trying to build up his thousand-acre spread along the banks of the Medina River in the wildest parts of West Texas. But Consuela was rico, high-born. Her grandfather, Don Carlos Garza, was the proprietor of nearly a half-million acres. Joel knew that Manuel Canales, the handsome Spanish captain, had the inside track with Don Carlos for Consuela's hand. So when Consuela met him secretly on the back patio and told him she loved him, he picked her up and carried her off to his cabin on the Medina. The rough cabin was a rude awakening for Consuela, but she tried hard and they were happy until she told Joel of the proposed invasion of San Antonio by Mexican troops. Despite Consuela's protests that she could not stay there without him, Joel leaves to warn the Texas Rangers. When she returns, she is gone. Unaware that she did not leave of her own free will, Joel joins the Rangers and becomes a Mexican prisoner, wondering if he will die before he finds out what has happened to his lovely bride.
