When Randolph turned rotten / by Charise Mericle Harper.
Best friends Randolph, a beaver, and Ivy, a goose, do everything together until Ivy is invited to a girls-only birthday sleepover party and Randolph, full of bad feelings, tries to spoil her fun.-
PreS-Gr. 2. Randolph, a beaver, and Ivy, a goose, sit in matching chairs and read, and sleep in a bunk bed. They are very happy, until Ivy is invited to a birthday party. When Randolph realizes he's going to be left alone while his friend enjoys a rollicking good time, he does bad things, including scaring Ivy with stories about the snakes and bears that she will meet on her trip. Once Ivy is gone, though, he's overcome with guilt. When there's an accident at the party, Ivy ends up saving the day--thanks to Randolph's tricks. Her success then paves the way for the old friends' happy reconciliation. What could have been saccharine and pedantic is instead made irreverent and fun thanks to Harper's exaggerated situations and signature art, with its brightly colored backgrounds and charmingly simple figures. Children will appreciate the lighthearted look at jealousy and enjoy the lively silliness on display. Jesse Karp. 40pg. AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, c2007.-
