General Note:
Genealogical county map of the United States of America inserted.
"The eighth edition includes many important new features, while retaining and updating the most useful aspects of previous editions. The text begins with a general section on the United States, followed by sections for each of the states and the District of Columbia, arranged in alphabetic order. Some previous editions included short sections on foreign countries, but these have not been included in this edition. New for this edition is a section containing color maps of each state. The map shows the state and county boundaries, county names, rivers and lakes within the state boundaries. These waterways can be extremely useful in plotting travel routes used by our ancestors as they moved from one part of the country to another. Also new for this edition is a special section on migration routes in the eastern United States. Knowing where your ancestor may have resided prior to his current location is essential for tracking earlier records on the family. Each trail is described, and a summary of the states and counties through which the trail passed is given. Maps showing the routes of these migration trails are also included" -- Introduction.
