Summary:

Originally a small tribe in the Carolina Piedmont when the Europeans arrived in 1540, by 1750 the Catawbas had become a nation, a union of survivors from numerous tribes. By the late 1800's, many converted to Mormonism. Many have assimilated but many have revived the crafts and customs of their ancestors.
