The first third of this book contains King's memoir, including tidbits about his family and his long battles with alcohol and drug addiction. The second part of the book offers inspiration and common sense advice to aspiring novelists, including examples of both good and bad writing and a description of his approach to research. The final portion of the book includes three lists of nearly a hundred novels which he considers the best that he's read in the past twenty years.
