The perfect fake : a novel / Barbara Parker.

Summary:

Tom Fairchild is a man with a past he can't shake. He's struggling to make it as a graphic artist, but his probation officer thinks he belongs in jail. When millionaire Miami real estate developer Stuart Barlowe offers him $50,000 to travel to Italy to make a perfect copy of a rare Renaissance map, Tom sees a way to solve his problems . . . except that Barlowe's daughter, Allison, a map expert herself, is being sent with him to supervise the project. Allison and Tom were lovers in college, but it ended badly. Now Allison is torn between her rekindled desire and her suspicion that Tom is pulling a scam: No one could duplicate a five-hundred-year-old map. Tom soon suspects that Barlowe wants a forgery, not a duplicate. He just doesn't know why, and Allison isn't talking. When one of Tom's contacts in Europe is murdered, Tom and Allison go on the run, tailed by a ruthless hit man and a rogue government agent. Then Barlowe shows up in Italy demanding his map. Tom will have to deliver if he wants to get out alive.
