Melodrama set in the U.S. in the 1970s. Jim Brandon (Conrad), a former player of the Chicago Bears, has been paralyzed during the Vietnam War. When he returns, he tries to get a job as a football coach, but he doesn't succeed. He is finally offered a job coaching a football team at St. Charles, the local juvenile detention center. Though initially there is discord between Jim Brandon and the children, they gradually come to see each other in a different light. Together they embark on a journey of discovery and respect that eventually culminates in a showdown with a powerful high school team.
