Summary:

The story of Nick Burnham, a young industrialist, and Lianne DeVilliers, the wife of an esteemed French ambassador, who meet by chance at the White House and again on a transatlantic voyage to Europe, where they begin an illicit affair; as war breaks out across Europe and Lianne's husband falls under suspicion as a Nazi collaborator, the pressure on their forbidden romance soon takes its toll, sending them to opposite sides of the globe.
