An era of progress and promise, 1863-1910 : the religious, moral, and educational development of the American Negro since his emancipation

Summary: the 1908 Clifton Conference, held at Dyke Rock Cottage, Clifton, Massachusetts and documents the the International Sunday-School Associations efforts to help religiously educate African Americans following their emancipation from slavery (1863-1910). Philander Smith College President James M. Cox and representatives from 33 other African American colleges participated in the three day conference. This rare book includes early images and historical information about Philander Smith College and over 150 other "Institutions for the Education of the Negro" (Hartshorn & Penniman, 1910).
